COVID-19 and Eye health

Coronavirus or COVID-19 may cause conjuctivitus or pink eye in the infected individual. The incidence of this is quite low only in 0.8% of the infected population. The risk of transmission of the new coronavirus through tears is very low although there were some insidences of this form of transmission in the literature.

In order to limit your chances of getting infected, try to avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible especially with unwashed hands. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap especially if you have been to a public space.

Despite some reports to the contrary according to American Optometric Association contact lenses are safe to wear during the pandemic. As long as hands are washed for 20 second prior to handling contact lenses. If you are infected with coronavirus stop wearing contact lenses for the duration of your illness.
